The Luxury of Time

This week I'm having a bit of a vacation. A change in scenery in which to plan product and recharge before starting to create my fall and winter shows. For someone like me who never sits still or is idle this can create a bit of a challenge. I am not used to taking time to relax. And I have to admit that while I am good at getting things done I'm not always as good at relaxing. I feel like I should be doing something. My hands should always be busy. At the end of the day I should be able to look at what I have accomplished right?

There are probably many people who have forgotten how to relax. And that is pretty scary. When I was muttering under my breath that I was bored and wishing I had brought along some work to do (which I on purpose had not) I knew I had to reexamine my attitude. I needed to rethink this. Because don't we all long for just this? Vacation. Getting away from it all. A life of luxury where we can do what we want. And here I am with exactly that. And I was complaining to myself. Am I crazy? So I took a walk. I lounged by the pool. I bought a cold drink, sat down and just people watched for (gasp) I don't even know how long. I watched a palm tree sway in the breeze. I forgot to look at my phone and check the time. I may have dozed off. I guess even I can relax.

So bring on the mojitos. Throw me in the pool. Invite me to a party. This grandma can put on her flip flops and mellow out with the best of them. This thing called relaxing is doing me some good. I may just put relaxation on my to do list

May the 4th be With You

I am not a Star Wars fanatic. I do like the movies and have seen them all. They are entertaining and certainly something all ages can enjoy together. There is one saying from Yoda that I keep taped over my work area. I have found it to be very true. And a needed kick in the butt when I need it.

"Do or do not...there is no try". Think about it. When someone gives you the response "I'll try" it almost always means they aren't going to do it. I'll try to make time for that. I'll try to call you. Let's try to get together. These things don't happen. It's almost always a built in excuse. In order to get things done it takes a more positive mindset. I will do that today. I'll call you tonight. I will see you tomorrow. The difference between those who accomplish much and those who stay in the same place is just going ahead and doing something. And once that forward momentum gets going it's amazing how far you can go.

So follow the advice of the funny looking green man with the big ears. He knows what he's talking about. Do it.

The Bag Sale

One of my favorite ways to get materials for my craft business is to go to bag sales. You can find a lot of treasures lying on tables, hanging on racks and sitting quietly in out of the way corners. I always have an idea of what I'm looking for but the unexpected finds are sometimes more fun. This past weekend beautiful wool, softly worn materials, random bits of silverware and vintage ribbons found their way into my bags. I also was able to talk and laugh with interesting people. One conversation I overheard has stayed in my mind all week.

As my husband was returning a hanger from an exceptionally beautiful orange wool coat to the church ladies manning the checkout table, I overheard them tell him "That was Gloria's coat". I have no idea who Gloria was. But I do know her coat is beautiful. As I cut it apart this week to add to my material stash I admired the color and softness of the material. I could envision it as a colorful strand plaited through a rug. Or reshaped into a soft pumpkin. Or sown into an accessory for a primitive doll. A second life for an ordinary orange wool coat.

Those items in my bags are treasures. There is no substitution for using the bits and pieces of the old to form something new. The worn edges, the soft fibers and faded colors are magic pieces from other people's lives that I borrow to form my crafts. Random, unexpected and interesting. Thanks Gloria.
