Traditional Plaited Wool Rugs

Making plaited rugs is a skill I learned while working as a costumed historical interpreter at Old World Wisconsin, an outdoor museum of pioneer history located in Eagle, Wisconsin. If you are interested in seeing living history (including crafting) come visit us in the beautiful Wisconsin Kettle Moraine.
My beautiful rugs are made of 100% wool and are plaited (flat-braided) with 3 strands in the Shaker style dating back to the 1840s. Each strand is individually finger-folded in the traditional method before being combined into a colorful plait. The plaits are hand-laced together for strength and durability, revealing a unique and colorful finished product. Each rug is an heirloom of color and design waiting to be placed in your home.
Rugs can be purchased pre-made or I can be contacted for custom orders. Some clients have requested woolen clothing of special significance to be added to a piece or have requested that I use their own collections of wool to fabricate their rugs. Arrangements for these requests are made on a case-by-case basis. I do not mix different fabric types in a single rug and have a set charge for stripping bulk wool or revising strips of incorrect size.
I also periodically teach classes on rug-plaiting. If you have an interest in hosting a class, please contact me. As new classes are scheduled at various venues I will post those on the home (Blog) page.
