I'm going to spend my birthday making something beautiful...
The Wistful Grandma is busy celebrating her entrance to a new decade. Thanks to everyone who has already helped me celebrate and to those hatching future celebration plans. I'll leave you with a favorite quote about getting older: "There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age." (Sophia Loren)

Today is Valentine's Day. A day for the heart. A doctor will say your heart is filled with muscle, an anatomical pump. A poet will say the heart is filled with your soul, the place where love resides. Hallmark says the heart can be placed on a card with a poem and given to someone today. But I say your heart is a magnet.
"There is a magnet in your heart that will attract true friends." (Paramahansa Yoganandya) What a beautiful picture this puts in my mind. Invisible lines crossing a room from my heart to other people. Perhaps drawing a stranger closer because we have something in common. An unseen power to lead me in the right direction. The power to repulse things that will harm me. Something deep inside of me that points to my true north. I hope you enjoyed your Valentine's Day. But even more, I wish you a magnetic heart. The mysterious power to attract true friends. The joy of finding love and giving it away. An invisible force for having a mini Valentine's Day every day. Each of us has a set of rules, some would say commandments, that we live by. This is one I need to add to my list. When you think about it there is so much sense to it.
Every day we seem to be faced with activities we want to do and activities we should do. It's easy to do the "want to" activities. The "should do's" are more difficult. "Should do's" often come from other people. Parents, friends, superiors or society. They're not our own ideas or desires. That's what makes them so difficult to fulfill. "Want to's" are really positive messages to ourselves. They are self-motivating and we are better at fulfilling them. A life full of "want to's" is better than a life of "should do's". But how do we get to that better life? Listen to yourself and determine where all the "should do's" are coming from. Stop being angry if you are following unwanted paths determined by others. If the "should do" is coming from yourself it is really a "want to". You won't regret or miss what others thought you "should" have done. |
