I have a snowman collection. This is my first snowman. He started it all. Purchased on a trip with friends he is still one of my favorites. Large, small and in-between. Metallic and sparkly, soft and white, hard and glassy. There's every kind of snowman inside my cabinet. They never melt and have given me many hours of enjoyment.

But as I get older I find I am not as interested in collecting things. I'm starting a new collection. I'm going to collect experiences. Playing with my young grandchildren, taking trips with the older ones. Traveling with my husband. Visiting my daughters and their significant others. Hugging my Dad for as long as he's around. Meeting new people and helping those along the way. Time becomes more precious every year. I will use it wisely and with joy.

This collection won't sit in my cabinet. I'll have to store it in my heart.

My Coffee Cup

This is one of my favorite coffee cups. I have several reminding me of special places, people and events. I use a different one each day for the coffee I choose to accompany my breakfast. I love the smell of coffee and the way different cups conform to and warm up my hands. If I am cold I will rest my cheek on the cup for extra warmth. And sipping that one cup in the morning is just enough for me. My life is always busy and my coffee moments become my time to plan how I will go about navigating my day. How will I do what I have to, create some space for what I want to do and have some time to relax and simply enjoy being in the moment? The daily balancing act.

As I rotate through my coffee cups at the start of each day they do more than hold my coffee and warm up my hands. They are my companions for that one instant in the morning when the whole day lies ahead of me and everything is possible. There is optimism and potential in every cup!

Never Stop Changing

I hear too many of my peers and elders say "I don't want to text", "I'll never do Facebook", "I won't have a computer in my house", "I can't figure out the remote". Being resistant to change is normal but shutting yourself off from technology is limiting and narrow-minded. We are the remnants of the greatest generation. We put the boom in the Baby Boomers. We sent men to the moon. And you can't use modern technology? Oh please!

You don't have to become an expert. Texting is just today's typing with the added bonus of an immediate conversation on the other end. I still talk to people, too -- it has not made me a hermit. I have Facebook accounts -- that's a conversation with pictures, humor and more gossip than a party line. And I'm old enough to use it wisely and sift out the worthless pieces. We have multiple computers in the house -- shopping, printing pictures, learning, reading, communicating, giving access to music libraries. This is multitasking heaven right under your own roof. How can you resist? And if you're having difficulty figuring out that new piece of equipment -- ask for help. Even if you have to look at directions written on a piece of paper every time -- so what? Wisdom is letting go of pride and embracing whatever adaptation is needed for your phase of life.

My point is this -- never stop changing. Venture into what is new and then use what pleases you. Don't set up an immovable barrier that keeps you in the past. The next generations are moving towards the future on a wave of technology. I'm going to jump on part of that wave. I'm going to text, blog, email, tweet and Facebook. Because I may be getting older, but I've still got a lot of worthwhile things to say!

My Piece of the Net

We all have events in our lives that can be called back again by connecting with concrete objects from the past. This small piece of basketball net is my connection to 1977. It is part of the net from my college basketball team when they became part of the NCAA Final Four. I can still feel the excitement of the day, the fun of traveling to the game and the spirit of being part of a larger college community experience. But it's also about remembering what it was like to be young, making friends that have been with me now for so many years.

So go ahead -- reconnect with your own piece of the net whatever it may be. I'll just settle down and watch the NCAA tournament. With a smile on my face.
