Step Away

I am used to having a "To Do" list. It seemed important to get everything done. Keeping myself organized did help each day go smoothly and I always felt good when everything was finished. But having a craft business is different. I can not command myself to create. Ideas are not always there when I want them to be. What I start sometimes evolves into something completely different. I find myself operating on a "What Will Happen Today" list.

This requires much more patience with myself. I have to listen to what my inner self is saying. I have to have faith that  I am always doing what I am supposed to be doing even if it was not my initial plan. At times I need a quieter place. Sometimes I need a more peaceful me. If I am frustrated nothing comes together right. Sometimes I have to step away.

And stepping away is perfectly fine. Beautiful things don't come from an unsettled mind. Creativity can' t get through if you're not ready to accept it. So embrace the fact that you will accomplish what is perfect for each day. It will simplify your life.

Yellow Tulip Moment

I took a family member to the doctor today and on the wall was a picture of some tulips. The picture was a field of bright red tulips with one lone yellow tulip in their midst. It immediately caught my eye. How did that one yellow tulip get there? It sure stood out. Was it a mistake? A random accent? Could someone have done that on purpose? I chuckled. I thought, someone's going to pluck that aberration out of there because it's spoiling the picture!

But wait. We're all like that yellow tulip at times. Alone in a sea of others that may not be the same as we are. Perhaps we believe in something that is unpopular. Perhaps we see things from a different perspective. Maybe we were born that way. We're not spoiling the picture. We're part of the interesting and unexpected. We may be the first ones to get plucked at but we'll also be the one everyone will talk about and remember.

So the next time you stand alone in your thoughts, actions or creativity, you're just having a yellow tulip moment. You will be the sole bit of originality, character or inventiveness in the tulip bed. And remember tulip bulbs multiply by creating new bulbs around the original one. Someday that lone yellow tulip may have company!

Stashing It In

If you are a crafter you have a stash. Somewhere there are piles of material, shelves of bric-a-brac, plans and patterns. Not to mention a Pinterest account. And a brain filled with ideas and endless things you'll get to "someday".

The way I've been collecting treasures, I must think I'll be here crafting forever. But as each year passes, I realize that I need to start fulfilling my ideas, finish those projects and even (gasp) share the items in my stash with others. And I find this shift in thinking joyful. I no longer reserve craft supplies like a lone hoarder. I pull them out and survey my treasures and use them with freedom. And I've been making some beautiful things -- creating  smiles and laughter. Allowing snippets of my stash out into the world instead of piling them in a cabinet. I always thought I enjoyed the shopping, collecting and finding. But I'm discovering the distribution of my beautiful things is even better.

So, I'm not "cashing it in", I'm "stashing it in". Making a point to utilize what I've had hidden for so long. From making presents to letting the grandkids explore my craft corner to designing new items to sell. It's all going to go out into the world. Because that is really where it belongs.
