A New Kind of Mother's Day

5/8/2015

Mother's Day is different now. My mother passed away two years ago so I walk by the racks of Mother's Day cards at the stores. I no longer have to determine what to buy for a woman who pretty much "has everything". There's no longer a big meal and celebration.

There are, however, reminders of her impact on my life. I inherited her small hands and a bit of her stubbornness. Presents she gave me still reside at my house. Dried rose petals from the roses on her casket fill a glass ball which hangs over my craft table -- a gentle reminder that we all are here but must one day move on. So what will I be doing on this Mother's Day?

My day will be spent working in a public venue. I will be helping others to celebrate Mother's Day and enjoy each others company. I will be spending some time remembering a woman who had a hard life, wasn't perfect, struggled with dementia at the end of her days, but will always be my mother.
